Solutions Day in the Virtual World
Second Life is a sophisticated extranet, representing the next wave of collaboration using a 3D Internet virtual world. It is so compelling that people actually spend real money to buy real estate in this online reality. The Swedish government actually has an embassy in Second Life.
Since Solutions Day is the beginning of the next movement, it made sense that American Solutions rent the virtual West front of the U.S. Capitol to hold a workshop in Second Life on September 27 where 13 years to the day earlier the Contract with America was signed on the steps on the real West end of Capitol.

Why This is Important
- Extranets and 3D Internet represent the next wave of collaboration.
- IBM is developing what they call interverses and extraverses -- virtual, online worlds that already have thousands of people working in them. As a worldwide company with 330,000 employees, IBM can actually bring people together in their virtual laboratories on 3D Internet without having to travel. It is a revolutionary development and has huge implications for learning, shopping and working. They already have 400 customers exploring this technology.
- 3D Internet is yet another example of how the private sector is leading transformational change, in this case, in the field of online collaboration.
- While perhaps the most famous, Second Life is only one of several thousand virtual worlds that exist right now in the broader universe that is 3D Internet.

- In 2008, American Solutions will explore idea of adopting for public policy what the business world is already doing very successfully: building a virtual world for public policy solution creation.
Why this is historic
- This is an example of the kind of leadership American Solutions intends to provide: leading government into the world that works—in this case what is working for the private sector by sharing the future of online collaboration.
- We want to illustrate a point of how far we’ve come in 13 years. Thirteen years ago, the Internet was in its infancy—the House and Senate web sites just went online and Republicans stood on the west front of the Capitol to sign the Contract with America. Thirteen years later, on Solutions Day, we return to the West Front of the US Capitol--but in the virtual world--to continue where The Contract left off.
Why We are Doing it
- We are having workshops in all 50 states, several foreign countries and making these workshops available to watch on the Dish Network and DirecTV and on the Internet. We want to reach as many different types of audiences to embed ideas that become solutions with turn into actions. A workshop in Second Life is another way to reach a different audience.
